Dr. Arwin D. Smallwood

President

Dr. Smallwood is a native of Indian Woods, North Carolina and the Indian Woods Community.  He is the Dean of the College of Arts Social Sciences and Humanities at North Carolina Central University. Prior to becoming Dean he served as the Interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and before that Chair of the Department of History and Political Science at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. He received his BA in Political Science in 1988 and MA in History in 1990 from North Carolina Central University.  He received his Ph.D. in early U.S and African American history from The Ohio State University in 1997. He was appointed the Director of African American Studies at Bradley University where he also taught history, 1994-2003. He was recruited to the University of Memphis to build its Ph.D. program in African American History and where he taught history, 2003 to 2013. He then became Chair of the Department of History at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, 2013-2018 and later Chair of the newly organized Department of History and Political Science, 2018-2022 and before leaving to become Dean of North Carolina Central’s College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities served as the Interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

Joanna Reed

Vice President

Joanna Reed is a native of the Indian Woods community. Joanna obtained a minor in Anthropology when earning her BA degree in English from East Carolina University. Since then, her viewing of life through the lens of cultural anthropology has driven Joanna’s passion for exploring cultures, especially the rich culture and history of her home community of Indian Woods, North Carolina. Joanna has formerly served as the president of the Bertie County Historical Preservation Society, and she served for a number of years as a docent providing historical interpretation for Bertie County’s Historic Hope Foundation. Joanna has found that knowledge of history and culture has anchored and been a guiding influence in her work as a creative, her experience as a former educator, and her current work as an allied health professional.

Kevin Pugh

Deacon, Financial Secretary, acting Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School Secretary, at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church. NAACP Bertie County Branch 2nd Vice President, Political Committee Chairman. West Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association Laymen League Financial Secretary. Secretary for Blue Jay Recreation Center Associate Degree in Biblical Theology, presently working on Bachelors Degree in Biblical Theology, at Triple C Bible College in Ahoskie NC.

Hal White

Treasurer

Hal Stacey White is a native of Indian Woods, NC. He received the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, and the Master of Christian Education (MACE) and Master of Divinity (MDIV) degrees from the Samuel DeWitt School of Theology, Virginia Union University, Richmond, VA. He currently serves as Associate Minister of Christian Education and Congregational Care at Second Baptist Church – West End, Richmond, VA.

Lori Speller

Lori Smallwood Speller is a dedicated educator and is passionate about history. A native of Windsor, North Carolina in Bertie County, she grew up in the Indian Woods Township of Quistna and Coniotte Road near the Roanoke River a region rich in cultural heritage and history. Her love for history was inspired by her mother, who instilled in her a deep appreciation for the past and its influence on the present. Lori is a graduate of Bertie High School. She has studied History and earned her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Elizabeth City State University, shaping her lifelong commitment to education and historical preservation. Lori now teaches the History of Bertie County and World History at Bertie High school where she shares her love of history with students. She brings the past to life through engaging lessons and deep discussions. Beyond the classroom, Lori is very active in her community and dedicates much of her time to service. She serves as a Deaconess, and she teaches adult Sunday school at her church, where she shares her wisdom and faith, helping other grow spiritually and intellectually. Lori is also, a devoted wife to Allen, a loving mother to their two children, Bridget (Joseph) and A.W. II and a proud grandmother to granddaughters Sage and Phoebe. She cherishes the time she spends with her family, passing down the values of education and cultural heritage, ensuring that the love of learning and history continues for generations.
